Notes on some of the ingredients

  • Rice Cakes: Flour-based ones will pick up flavor a little better and the rice-based ones have better texture. These will be sold frozen in a place like Hmart. Here is one example.

  • Fish Cakes: These will also be in the frozen section of a place like Hmart. These are the ones I got.

  • Korean Red Pepper Flake (Gochugaru): We need coarse and finely ground gochugaru for this class. It is generally sold in 1 pound bags like this. You may also be able to find a small jar of Mother-In-Law’s pepper flakes at Whole Foods. If you have the coarse flakes, you can then just use a spice grinder to make the finely ground red pepper. So I would recommend just buying one bag and grinding it yourself for the powder.

  • Gochujang: There will be many options at a store like Hmart. This is the one I got. You should also be able to find the Mother-In-Law’s brand at Whole Foods.

  • Jin Soy Sauce: If you can, try to get Sempio Soy Sauce.

  • Dried anchovies: If you have the option to buy a package of small anchovies or large anchovies, get the larger ones. They will be better for this class.

  • Butterfly Pea Flower Tea: You can buy this online. Here is one option. If you have seen tea drinks at a “hip” coffee shop or cocktails at bar that a blue or purple, they probably got that color from Butterfly Pea Flower. If you can’t find them or get them delivered in time, do not worry about it. The sake cocktail will still be good!
